The Christian Unity and Interfaith Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) joins with our Catholic sisters and brothers, and with people of faith around the world, in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.
Pope Francis was a servant of the Gospel whose life and ministry reflected a deep commitment to justice, reconciliation, and care for the most vulnerable among us. His pastoral heart, prophetic voice, and courageous witness to the love of Christ challenged and inspired Christians across traditions.
As a partner in dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church for over four decades, the Disciples of Christ recognized in Pope Francis a fellow pilgrim—one who embodied the vision of a Church walking together with the suffering and calling the world to compassion and peace.
We are especially moved by Pope Francis’ request for funeral rites marked by simplicity and centered on the Church’s faith in the Risen Christ. Even in death, he points us to resurrection hope and the heart of the Gospel.
We give thanks to God for the life, witness, and leadership of Pope Francis. May his legacy continue to inspire the Church toward unity, humility, and love.
